Your friends have invited you to the spa with nothing to do but relax, unwind and reconnect.  However the excitement can quickly in to anxiety if you are not sure about the customs and courtesies associated with a spa visit.  Even if you are not a first timer you may still have questions that you not feel comfort able asking, so here are a few tips to spa-right on spa-day.

As with any invitation you should RSVP promptly.  Since this is usually a casual outing that does not involve travel or hotel accommodations, your response should be given within two days.  Ideally, just enough time to check your calendar, but not long enough to hold up your host’s plans.   Once you know you are going let your host know and contact the spa to book your service.  If you plan to have more than one service, it is a good idea to leave the massage for last.  When booking, provide any information necessary to ensure your visit is as enjoyable as possible.  Such information might include a gender preference for your service provider or notifying them of any allergies you may have.   This is a good time to go over any special payment arrangements, any restrictions or if the gratuity has is included in the price. Remember to et them know if you plan to use a gift certificate, or perhaps your hotel reward points if any. Typically there is some conversion that must take place so take care of that prior to arrival. Few things end the feeling of relaxation than finding out you owe more than you planned.

Before you hang up, ask about the cancellation policy.  You may also want to make sure to provide the best contact information for you if they need to contact you before your appointment.  Many spas offer their guests complimentary yoga classes or use of the hot tube, steam room, pool, or showers.  If such amenities are available you will want to show up with you bag properly packed to take in all options that appeal to you.

Be sure to arrive at the spa with enough time to complete any required paperwork, change into a robe and slippers and clear you mind before your treatment.  After all who can enjoy the day ahead if you are rushing in late to an appointment.  Once you settle in, disconnect.  This means turning off your cell phone, don’t check your email or texts, and signing off social media platforms.  Not only will this help you relax but if is considered rude to interrupt someone else’s relaxation efforts by using mobile devices.  bring a book or magazine to help you enjoy the downtime if just sitting still is a challenge for you.

Take full advantage of all of the amenities offered at the spa including visiting the steam room, the sauna, or event taking a dip in the pool. Just remember to drink plenty of water and stay well hydrated. If your service follows the spa amenities, be sure to shower before your heading in to treatment.  Taking a shower will wash off the chorine, sweat, and other additives you would not want massaged into your skin during your treatment.

During your treatment it is fully expected that you communicate with your service technician to make your experience optimal.  You will want advise if there is too much, or not enough pressure, if the temperature of the room is too hot or too cool, or if the music is too loud or not ideal for you to relax.  Another thing to keep in mind is know and respect your personal comfort zone.  While service technicians are expertly trained to perform their skill with a high degree of professionalism, you are at liberty to exercise your digression with how far you undress, and if any areas that are off limits.

Once your service is complete, your technician will tell you to take your time getting up.  While you do not want to rush, keep in mind that most spas have a small window of time between appointments.   Some service rooms will have an envelope available to leave a tip for your technician whereas others will give you’re the option to tip when you settle your bill.  If you are pleased with your service a 20 percent tip is customary and always appreciated.
